Family Photography Dressing Guide (and more)

Feel free to ignore this guide!

I know, I know, but hear me out... I would like to get one thing straight before starting this guide. This is YOUR family, YOUR legacy and we are here to create memories for you in an artistic way. And art has no rules. So if the blouse that you want to wear at YOUR photo session is bright-neon pink and has a big text in the middle, then most of the advice you would receive is: "Noooo! Don't do it" (one of the reasons behind: it reflects pink light on your skin and would make editing more time consuming and difficult, not impossible). But what if the blouse was the last gift that you received from your grandmother? Now you brought the entire family together, something that she would have loved to be a part of and wearing that blouse would make you feel like she is there. Is it more important to please the photographer and wear something else? In my opinion, no! It's more important that you enjoy the photography session and the final product is meaningful for you. Some photo sessions will take more or less of my editing time/energy. I am aware and fully accept that it's part of the business and is not something that should or will be placed on your shoulders.

With that being said.

If you do not have anything particular set in your mind, these are some guidelines that you can follow:

  • Wear minimal accessories;
  • Wear comfortable clothes. I will not ask you to do cartwheels, but we will move around as much as needed to keep the children engaged in the photo session (and adults too);
  • Avoid logos, text and very busy prints;
  • Wear natural colors like: brown, gray, black, soft white, dark green, soft blue, dusty blue, blue jeans + white shirt, peach, terracotta, beige, champagne pink etc;
  • If your clothes needs ironing, make sure they are ironed.

Extra tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes if the photo sessions takes place outdoors;
  • For a casual/comfy look you can stay barefoot inside the house;
  • Have a set of backup clothes ready. Stuff happens and it might happen right in the beginning of the photo session.

They say photos are worth a thousand words. You can get inspired from clients that already had their family photographs taken.
